The McClurey Family {Family Shoot}

I say it at some point every year.. when the wedding craziness of Summer dies down I love being booked in for a few family shoots in the Autumn. I’ve had a few with the wonderful colours of October over the past few weeks but, for now, here are The McClurey family, who I’ve been meaning to blog for months now.

All I ever want to achieve at family shoots, aside from getting a few ‘mantlepiece’ shots, is just children being themselves. Whether it’s cheeky smiles, playing with their favourite toy, showing me their bedroom, photo-bombing each other, pulling crazy faces or showing some rare sibling appreciation.. seeing little personalities coming through is just the best thing ever. THIS is why I hate studio family photography. In my opinion.. the madness of childhood is a million times better suited to them pottering around their own environment at home, or doing something they love to do.. letting them run riot at the park, the beach, the playground.. I want them to show me what they’re really like and to see smiling faces without me having to ask. This, for me, is what family photography is about. The McClurey Family July 2014-107The McClurey Family July 2014-009The McClurey Family July 2014-001The McClurey Family July 2014-011 The McClurey Family July 2014-017The McClurey Family July 2014-021 The McClurey Family July 2014-037 The McClurey Family July 2014-039 The McClurey Family July 2014-041 The McClurey Family July 2014-047 The McClurey Family July 2014-056 The McClurey Family July 2014-057 The McClurey Family July 2014-067 The McClurey Family July 2014-071 The McClurey Family July 2014-077 The McClurey Family July 2014-085 The McClurey Family July 2014-091 The McClurey Family July 2014-101 The McClurey Family July 2014-103All rights reserved. Hazel & Gary | Armathwaite Hall, Kewsick

Hazel & Gary-150Hazel and Gary… where do I begin?

I was completely over-the-moon-excited to be asked to be part of an elopement. I adore the busy chaos of wedding so much, and in the middle of the chaos is where I’m most comfortable, there’s so much going on, so much interaction, so many faces, so much to photograph.. I’ve always wanted to be part of an elopement to see the other side. The calm. The two people sloping off and celebrating quietly together. Savouring the quiet of the day and just spending some ridiculously special and sacred time together..

And that brings me back to Hazel and Gary. Who took a few days away, just the two of them, to the blissful peace of the Lake District to say their vows to each other. They got ready together and were so relaxed throughout, no stress whatsoever. So chilled that when it was ceremony time Hazel forgot her bouquet, Gary forgot the rings, they both forgot the music to walk them down the aisle and back up again… but obviously not one speck of all that really mattered.

This day was all about them..

Summer | iPhone

Backing up my iPhone pictures yesterday I realised I haven’t done any sort of ‘life lately’ type post for a while that hasn’t just been a picture dump from travelling somewhere or other.. So here is a little catch up post with what I’ve been up to when I haven’t been at weddings or editing and left my desk. I have about 25 films to develop but I really can’t face sorting them out yet.. so for now this is all iPhone snaps. The best camera is the one you have on you, right?

Somewhat shamelessly, this post will have more than it’s fair share of pictures of my girl. I vowed to try and spend more quality time out of the house with her and embrace even a spare hour here and there. She’s come on so much this year and has grown from a gorgeously stocky little thing into a lanky long-limbed girl. She’s a joy, even if she spends half her time keeping me in check, like the little granny she can be. This year has seen her ride her bike without stabilisers, attempt to swim unaided underwater, have her first ever haircut and start a new school…

…and she turned five. There was a hot day in Mum and Dad’s garden for the growing number of kids in the family to enjoy the pool and garden, and a week after we moved house (ridiculously ambitious) we had a party for her at the house.phone-010That lovely Camera Hannah invited me along to Tuscany to second shoot, where we enjoyed taking in the scenery, ate amazing food and came up with theories about what Filipo Berio was like.
phone-038This year has been a bit of a tough one along the way with David working away during the week, but finally it seems like everything is starting to settle into more of a routine as the months have gone on, and we even squeezed in a few couple-y things amidst the chaos.. Third anniversary dinner, a few days out in Marrakech while I was shooting a wedding, Snoop Dogg and a day at Leeds Festival.phone-005We had our first ‘loading up the car, getting the ferry and driving down’ holiday to the Dordogne. I mucked about with a GoPro, we ate a ridiculous amount of bread, pate and cheese with wine, I burnt my back, Viv swam and made friends, we played cards and we actually had time to think, read and just ‘be’. I came back with an extra few pounds but I’ve decided to see it shows I did the holiday right..phone-002Admittedly, I was pretty shit at organising enough social stuff for myself, but I did try, even if it took ages to actually get around to seeing some people properly. Over the last month I’ve actually had time to cook again, which I love, and hopefully will find more time to spend with the gorgeous people I have in my life over the next few months too. Below is just the best of the rest, really: good food, good people, little trips here and there and a few treats along the way. Hope you’ve all had a wonderful Summer.. For me though, Autumn is bliss and I’m so excited to embrace the little things and taking everything at a better pace until the end of the year.

Happy October all; the best month of the year.
