2013

It’s difficult to know where to begin.. it’s not the easiest task putting an ‘end of year’ post together but it’s joyous looking back at how much my camera and I have been part of – going back through hard drives and blog posts to find the images that stick out on my mind from this year’s body of work is wonderful, and makes me eternally grateful that my job brings me as much joy as it does.

This year has seen me go FULL TIME. I have put my freelance journalism work firmly on the back burner for now, towards the end of this year my workload just seemed to grow and grow – and next year is looking to be my busiest yet too. It’s a great feeling, and such a blessing to be able to work for myself doing something I love this much. We also moved house slap-bang in the middle of wedding season in August, which was as chaotic as it sounds, and now I have a designated ‘home office’, which makes a huge difference.

My work has seen me travel all over the country and beyond, which really is the best thing ever. From beaches in Scotland to the banks of the Thames in London, rural Staffordshire to the hills of Italy, the peaceful Lake District to Las bloody Vegas. I’ve also taken bookings for Italy, France and Marrakech next year.. It’s not what I expected in my wildest dreams and I really can’t wait.

I’ve been lucky enough to see families from shoots last year and see their children at the next stage in their lives, I’ve begun to do maternity portraits as well as newborn sessions, and amazingly enough I’m seeing couples whose weddings I photographed become parents, as well as meet their beautiful babies. Each step is a moment in their history and my heart melts to be part of each one. I’ve also carried on doing a little commercial work here and there, and there looks to be much more of this next year too.

And I’ve also managed to do a little more personal work this year too, which is something I was really aiming for when I made some new year resolutions in January. It’s harder than it sounds sometimes to pick up your camera on ‘days off’, especially in the thick of wedding season, but I’m always glad I did, and I hope to create even more ‘just for me’ next year too.

I have much more to share and blog from this year, but there just isn’t time, and I’m really looking forward to clocking off for a few days now and catching up with everything in the new year. A huge, huge thanks again to all my wonderful clients, past and present, and for everyone who has helped make this year one to remember. I had a blast and hope you did too.

Here is my 2013..

A massive extra thanks has to go to my husband Dav (and Vivienne, although I very much doubt she’s reading this), for his unconditional support and consistently strong belief that I really should do what I love, even if the slog is slightly harder sometimes (often!) along the way. Lovell you always. xx

Las Vegas | Personal

Last month we had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shoot Kerry and Rob’s wedding in Las Vegas. Kerry herself is a fabulous wedding photographer.. so no pressure there then.. but in the days around the wedding we had time to explore the city..

I knew I’d love Vegas but I never expected to be blown away by it as much as I was. (GO. It’s a playground for adults.) Anywhere that promotes 24 hour casinos, cocktails with breakfast, gorgeous food and a ridiculously good night life is A-OK with me.

We also pulled ourselves out of bed at 6am the day after the wedding to catch a bus to the Grand Canyon and it was completely worth the 4-hour drive with a tour guide who was clearly making it up as he went along. You could sit and take the Canyon in all day. Un-bloody-believable.

A huge thank you to Kerry and Rob for giving us the chance to have a cheeky four days in Sin City, we had a blast. I want to go back… Here are my tourist-y photographs from our trip..

Italy | Personal

Some personal photographs from Summer.. These past few months have been busy, and I feel awful for forgetting to sort out my own photographs sometimes, so here is a catch up post from our adventures in Italy from July.

We had a quiet few days at a campsite just outside of Rome, ate lots of antipasti, drank lots of beer and prosecco.. visited Rome for the day (in intense heat!) before driving into the hills for Rosie and Jon’s wedding in Arpino. Dav’s family have roots there, and the small town was full of friends and family for the best part of a week – amazing. Lots of time with everyone eating, drinking and socialising in the piazza, and lazy days wandering around the area taking in the scenery. It was amazing to have a family holiday in the middle of the Summer madness, and it came at just the right time. Here are a few favourite snaps from our week away..

Elizabeth {Personal Work}

For a while I’ve been looking at pushing myself in new ways. I’ve wanted to do more portraiture work for a while but, for some reason, I was scared to give it a go. Being scared is ridiculous (and also a bad excuse) considering I usually do wedding photography, a long day full of details, guests, pressure and.. well.. a lot of portraits of the bride and groom.

I wanted to spend around an hour just capturing Elizabeth and trying a few new processing techniques. I wanted to improve how I direct my subject to get the images in my head.. to try working in a different setting and to try to use my camera and work my post processing in a different way than I’m used to. On the day we had a pretty even light, it didn’t rain (always a bonus), Elizabeth is stunning and she was up for getting into bushes, lying on the floor and later happily pulled twigs and pine cones out from her hair in the name of a few pictures. Hopefully these pictures show how I see her, beautiful, with her huge dark eyes and long ombre hair..

I’m looking to do much more one-on-one portraiture work where I can fit it in – an hour or so in different locations to keep pushing and keep experimenting. Please drop me an email at info@sallytphotography.com if you are willing to help me with my project work and spend a little time in front of my camera (not too scary I promise) in return for a disk of images.
